BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

TYPE : glabrous perennial. Hs.
ROOTS: obovoid or fusiform tubers, tapers towards the junction
  with the stem.
STEMS: solid base, hollow above. Grooved & striate.
UMBELS: compound. 4-10 rays, smooth 15-30 mm, thickening after flring. Peduncle >
than rays. Terminal with long pedicellate   male & shortly pedicellate hermaphrodite flrs.
Lateral all male.   Partial umbels : pedicels thicken after flring.
LEAVES: lower 2-4 pinnate, long petiolate, soon withering, lobes 10-30mm. linear to linear-
lanceolate. Upper 1-2 pinnate,   linear-lanceolate lobes. Petiole < than blade. Cotyledons
  contracted into a petiole. 
BRACTS: 0. Bracteoles : 10-17, lanceolate, acute.
FLOWERS : white. Sepals acute, persistent. Outer petals  radiating.
Styles form a stylopodium. Fl. 5-6.
FRUIT: 3-3.5 cm. Subcylindrical. Commisure broad. Mericarps with prominent ridges;
Carpophore present. Vittae solitary. Styles < than fruit, erect to divergent. Constricted at
junction with  pedicel. Stigma tapering. 2n=22*.

HABITAT: wet, rich meadows, near rivers.

DISTRIBUTION:
local, decreasing. S. & E. of a line from Severn to the Wash. Two
sites in Worc. & Notting. W.,C. & S. Europe. S.E.  Asia, N.W. Africa.
