Trinia glauca (L) Dumort.               Honewort



NOMENCLATURE

Trinia : Named after Karl Bernhard Trinius, (1778-1844)  Russian botanist.
glauca: bluish green colour.

PREVIOUS NAMES : T. vulgaris (D.C.) Apinella glauca (L) Caruel.

OTHER NAMES : Honeywort.


BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION


TYPE : glabourous, glaucous, dioecious biennial or perennial.  Always monocarpic. Hs.
STEMS : solid, grooved, remains of petioles at the base. Much 
branched, spreading at a wide angle.
HEIGHT : 5-20cm
UMBELS : compound. Male 1cm diam, flat topped. 4-8 smooth,  subequal rays 5-10mm.
Female similar but very unequal rays up  to 3 cm. Peduncle > than rays.
MALE PLANTS: dense partial  umbels with numerous pedicellate firs.
FEMALE PLANTS: Partial umbels lax, a few long-pedicellate flrs.
LEAVES: lower 2-3 pinnate, segments 5-15mm, linear, acute,  with cartilaginous
apex. Petiole slender, sheathing below. Upper smaller, < divided. Cotyledons
tapered at the base, no  petiole.
BRACTS : 0-1, 3-f id. Bracteoles: 0 to 3, 2-3 fid.
FLOWERS: White. Styles form stylopodium. Fl. 5-6.
FRUIT : 3mm, ovoid, laterally compressed, smooth. Commisure   narrow. Mericarps
with prominent broad ridges. Carpophore   present. Vittae: 5 large within the ridges
& 4 small between   the ridges. Styles 2-3 x > than stylopodium, recurved and  
appressed. Stigma capitate. 2n=18*

HABITAT: dry grassland. Dry limestone soil.

native. Local S. Dev, N. Som. & Bristol. C.& S.
  Europe, N. to S.England. SW. Asia.
