BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

TYPE : robust hairy perennial. Hs. AROMA : liquorice smell.
STEM : solid, grooved, swollen below the nodes, sometimes purple spotted. HEIGHT : 150cm.
UMBELS : 5—8 cm diam. Compound. 12—25 glabourous rays, 1.5—3(4.5)cm
long peduncle,  > than rays. Terminal hermaphrodite. Lateral male.
LEAVES : 3—pinnate, pale yellowish green, appresed hairy to nearly glabrous on both surfaces,
margins shortly ciliate.. long-petiolate. Lobes 10—40mm, lancolate, deeply toothed or lobed,
the teeth narrowed to the apex. Cotyledons tapered at base. no petiole.
BRACTS: 0—3. subulate 2cm. Bracteoles 5—8, = or > than pedicels in flower,
lanceolate, aristate, fringed, hairy, ultimately deflexed.
FLOWERS : pure white, sepals minute. Styles form a stylopodium. Fl. 6—7.
FRUIT : 9mm, oblong but narrowed rather abruptly near the apex, constricted at the commisure.
Mericarps : broad, rounded ridges. Carporphore present. Vittae solitary. Pedicels: no ring of
hairs at apex. Styles x2 > as the stylopodium, recurved, stigma capitate. 2n=22.

HABITAT: open meadows.

DISTRIBUTION: intro. Naturalised in a few places in S.Scotland and S.England.
Particularily Callander. W.Perth. Native in C. & S. Europe. S.W. Asia.
